The Video Revolution Part 15-Sales and Marketing In 1984 I started Primeau Productions by producing real estate sales audio programs. I knew I wanted to be making videos but you have to remember, it was very expensive to be in video production business back then.

All editing systems were non linear and you had to own three beta sp decks and a very expensive switcher/edit counsel to edit video. I learned so much about selling while making those tapes. One of the things I learned is that you can earn while you learn. How cool is that? Purchase your video system and immediately sell a job. Get a 50% deposit and tell the client it will take 60 days to complete.

Use that sale to learn your system. Load the footage and start reading. There are also many websites that have video tutorials on just about every software program on the face of the earth.

One of my favorites is www.lynda.com. A subscription is worth it’s weight in gold! Today, computers have made the editing process easy and affordable which is one of the reasons we have hit the video revolution! Because video is so affordable, there are a lot of people making video! It is up to you to make a difference and get noticed. Prospecting This is a science, not an art. Well actually, it is an art. The art of communicating sincerity, honesty and respect all at the same time to people as you meet them in networking or take their inquiry calls. Prospecting has to be sincere and to a group who you position your marketing to. It helps if the group has heard of you before. Marketing, to be successful, has to be done in waves of three impressions. If you do one marketing push and don’t get results, its because one push is not enough. A good marketing strategy has three pushes or message deliveries in each campaign. Writing articles Networking It didn’t hit me at first but networking is crucial to the success of your video production business. You have to get out in public and meet people. Join your chamber of commerce, small business association or rotary or optimist club. Offer to give a presentation for the group on something close to your heart. Could you do a presentation on preserving your families heritage? One of the products I absolutely love to sell is heritage videos. This is a product that is composed of old 8mm film, pictures and music. It can even be narrated by an elder in your family as well as include video interviews with family members telling your families story. If you picked a business networking group, give a presentation on effective marketing videos or TV commercials. Both are hot product categories for your business. Marketing videos are our number one product at Primeau Productions and have made us a lot of money. I first learned the art of marketing then designed my own formula for marketing videos. Pick an association Have cheerleaders These are people who absolutely love you and will tell everyone on the planet about your video production business. When I first began networking at the National Speakers Association, I met several people who were not end users of my product, preview videos, but they were people who used my product to book the speakers and earn a commission. Naturally they loved it when the videos turned out great (and they almost always did) and placed a speaker for their clients meeting. You can grow your video production business with cheerleaders as referral generators. You can literally double your business over night by asking your happy customer who they know who can benefit from your service. Get that referral contact info and contact them. Tell them you just completed a video for Mr. Smith and he recommended you call them about their upcoming event. This may not be instant business but it will be a seed of business to grow.
